Oceans Development Programme

What the Ocean Development Programme offers

*This programme replaces the Pre-Oceans programme from the 2017-2018 summer season and is run in the school holiday period in January 2020. See dates below.

The Oceans Development holiday programme is for 8-9 year olds, as well as children aged 10-13 years, who are attending junior surf on Sundays, and are not planning on competing in the Oceans 2019 event. Oceans Development offers some extension of the skills developed in our Junior Surf programme on Sundays.

During the Oceans Development holiday programme,  participants will learn a variety of skills suited to their ability and experience, including:

  • Beach skills e.g. sprinting and flags

  • Surf swimming e.g. safely moving in and out of the surf, using rips and currents and an introduction to surf swim racing

  • Board paddling e.g. safely moving in and out of the surf, using rips and currents and an introduction to board racing.

Whilst developing the above skills, our experienced coaches use a framework where participants become familiar with "living" our club values - fun, respect, commitment, encouragement and excellence. This helps them to prepare for the Ocean Programme the next step along the pathway to become a lifeguard.

Skills developed during the Oceans Development Program offers participants an opportunity to compete in junior surf sport events throughout summer, joining other junior athletes from around NZ to share their passion of surf sport.
